Democrats seized on President Trump’s weakness on Tuesday night, even though it was a victory for them in the end.

The president was pummeled with nearly two dozen questions on the coronavirus throughout the night and was not able to announce a plan for how the federal government would respond to the pandemic, much less provide the leadership the White House administration was supposed to provide.


Trump began the night by calling for prayers and declaring a “national emergency” to combat coronavirus. He praised then-Vice President Pence for getting a coronavirus vaccine to the marketplace, while then-Defense Secretary Jim Mattis for having a “stronger and smarter” plan to battle coronavirus.

The president pushed back after Democrats pressed him to provide a broader plan.

“I don’t like it,” he said to applause. “I don’t think it’s the right thing to do, but do it anyway.”

The night’s format, which began on MSNBC, quickly shifted over to CNN, NBC News and Fox News Channel as they covered the pandemic response together. NBC News anchor Lester Holt encouraged viewers to add comments to the live stream using the hashtag #democracynow.

The comments, which heavily favored Trump, reflected the president’s popular support, with voters seemingly more concerned about the growing outbreak of coronavirus.
